The PLT may not be necessary to teams that are experimenting with new product concepts and are a long way from production. In general the PLT is at its most valuable form when there is a need for rich logs of test data on a given product. Here are four commons situations that lend themselves to using a PLT:
- High frequency testing, as seen in high-volume production
- High complexity products
- High reliability requirements on the product
- High traceability requirements on the product
The more of these conditions that are satisfied, the more valuable the PLT is to the project.
